Centenary Writing Prize

A creative writing competition open to all current Swansea University students.

As part of the Centenary Essays project, we want to hear from you. Submit your poetry, prose, creative non-fiction or drama to be in with a chance of winning vouchers, an award, and publication on the Centenary Essays website.

The Centenary Prize will be judged bilingually by academic staff from Swansea’s Creative Writing department and staff from Academi Hywel Teifi.

We welcome contributions in both English and Welsh.

Centenary Prize Rules

All entries must be submitted as attachments to digitalhumanities@swansea.ac.uk between January 21st and April 6th 2020.  Winners will be notified in late May and a prize evening will be held at the National Waterfront Museum at a date TBC in June.  Entries will be judged by members of Swansea University’s Creative Writing department and Academi Hywel Teifi.

Work should be submitted in .doc format in 12pt single-spaced Times New Roman font. Writers should submit only one entry each. Entrants should include their student number and the title of their entry at the top of the first page; each subsequent page should be numbered. The judges’ decisions are final.

Poetry

Poets can submit 1-2 poems of up to 50 lines each. Titles are not included in the word count. All writing must be the poet’s original work and must not be already published elsewhere at the time of entry.

Prose (Fiction/Drama/Creative Non Fiction)

Writers can submit a maximum of 2,000 words of any genre. All writing must be the creator’s original work and must not be already published elsewhere at the time of entry.

Flash Fiction

Writers can submit a maximum of 250 words. All writing must be the creator’s original work and must not be already published elsewhere at the time of entry.

Eligibility

The Centenary Prize is open to all current students of Swansea University writing in English or Welsh.

All entries must be entirely the work of the entrant – by entering you confirm that the work is your own.

Entries may not have been published elsewhere, or have placed in any other competition. Work previously self-published on the entrant’s personal blog or social media will be considered if it is taken down before submission.

If you wish to withdraw your entry, you may contact the Prize committee at digitalhumanities@swansea.ac.uk in order to do so.
